Cameras 2 and 3 work in tandem to cover frontline singers and occasionally instrumentalists.
Camera 2’s main responsibility is to cover the individual commanding the stage. This will vary by song and will also include any Pastors or speakers. During musical numbers, Camera 2 will usually maintain a tight, “three-button shot” of the person leading the song.
Camera 3 will typically cover a secondary singer or group of singers. If no other singer is lit then the lead singer will be framed in a wider shot than that of Camera 2.
Exiting the Stage
Another important coverage rule to understand is that we do not follow people who are exiting the stage. The Director will cut to a wider shot to accomplish the transition, so you as a camera operator must maintain your frame, and let the subject exit your frame. This may seem unnatural to you but is part of our “Frame and Cut” philosophy.
